Abstract:

PURPOSE:To stably detect an edge picture element capable of sufficiently grasping the contour outline of a target by selecting the edge picture element based on a curvature change on a luminance edge searching route by means of a curvature calculating means and an edge picture element selecting circuit. CONSTITUTION:A smoothing circuit 16a removes a high frequency noise component from a luminance signal included in a picture element on the edge searching route and outputs smoothed luminance and a curvature calculating circuit 17 calculates a curvature from the smoothed luminance of each picture element on the edge searching route. An edge picture element selecting circuit 19 successively checks the smoothed luminance values included in respective picture elements on the edge searching route and detects the initial picture element obtained when the curvature from the center of picture elements in a range having prescribed luminance value is changed from decrement to increment as the edge picture element. Even in an image whose luminance change is moderate, an edge picture element capable of sufficiently grasping the contour of a target can stably be detected.
