Abstract:
PURPOSE:To easily recognize environments existing in the front of a certain vehicle such as the movement of its forward vehicle and the structure of a road together with image information. CONSTITUTION:A camera 1 picks up an environment existing in the front of a certain vehicle as an image and sends the image to an environment recognizing device 2 as image information. The device 2 recognizes the environment based upon the inputted image information to extract its forward vehicle, extracts the feature point of the forward vehicle and sends the extracted result to a CPU 3. The CPU 3 controls the vertical and horizontal drive of a universal head 6 so as to direct the camera 4 to the feature point extracted by the device 2. The image picked up by the camera 4 is inputted to a feature point tracking device 7 and the CPU 3 sends a signal to a lens controller 9 to control the zooming of a lens mechanism 5 for the camera 4 and adjusts the focus of the mechanism 5 so as to calculate a distance up to the feature point. Then the CPU 3 calculates the positional change and speed of the forward vehicle as the movement of the forward vehicle based upon the vertical and horizontal movement of the camera 4 to the feature point and the focal distance of the lens mechanism 5.
