To provide a cogeneration system and an engine generator start method not causing a malfunction due to formation of ice of vapor contained in high temperature exhaust gas of an engine when cooling water is circulated in an exhaust heat exchanger to start an engine generator, even when a cooling water temperature lowers down to a freezing point of water.
The cogeneration system 1 has constitution, in which the engine generator 8 is started after a heater 206 is turned on to heat the cooling water, if a temperature detected by an outside air temperature sensor 7a or an exhaust heat temperature sensor 205 is not more than a predetermined temperature in starting the engine generator 8. The engine generator start method for the cogeneration system using exhaust heat from the engine generator 8 for heating or the like of stored hot water, comprises, a step for an initial temperature determination, a step for turning on the heater, and a step for starting the engine generator.
