To attain uniform and high transfer efficiency related to the whole color image, and to enlarge the adjustable extent of a transfer field so as to flexibly adjust the transfer field.
Processing for measuring the relation between a change in a current value, supplied to a transfer belt 141 and the transfer efficiency ES of a single-layer toner image transferred from the intermediate transfer belt 11 to a paper and a relation between the change and the transfer efficiency EM of a several-layered toner image is performed, while variously changing the pressurizing force G of a pressure member 146, then, the fluctuation tendencies ES/A, EM/A of the transfer efficiency ES, EM for each pressurizing force G is obtained. The fluctuation tendency S/A is compared with the fluctuation tendency M/A for each pressurizing force G, then, the pressurizing force by which the fluctuation tendency S/A becomes equal to the fluctuation tendency M/A is set as a transfer pressure TG. A transfer current TA is decided so that the transfer efficiency of each of the single-layer toner image and the several-layered toner image becomes the appropriate value suitable for reproducing the color image, based on the fluctuation tendency E/S and the fluctuation tendency E/A under the transfer pressure TG.
