To prevent torque fluctuation or smoke exhaust owing to the secondary fuel injection without increasing an NOx exhaust amount when performing secondary fuel injection relating to an internal combustion engine.
A control device of the internal combustion engine is provided with a means for performing secondary fuel injection (for example, post injection, exhaust gas system fuel addition), a variable valve timing control device to increase or decrease an internal EGR amount by driving a variable valve mechanism to adjust a positive or negative valve overlap period between a suction valve opening period and an exhaust valve opening period, and an external EGR control means for increasing or decreasing the external EGR amount by adjusting at least an opening of the EGR valve installed midway of an external EGR passage to connect an exhaust passage and a suction passage, and an opening of a suction throttle valve disposed in the suction passage. When the second fuel injection completion time comes, the internal EGR ratio is increased higher than the external EGR ratio in increasing target total ERG ratio.
