Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device of a birefringence control type, in which a black level with high display quality can be achieved and insufficient blackness can be suppressed.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device of a birefringence control type that displays in a normally-black mode includes: a liquid crystal display panel 5 having a liquid crystal layer 2 and a light-reflecting part 47 for reflecting light entering through a display screen 3 side and passing through the liquid crystal layer 2; a first polarizing plate 6 disposed on the display screen 3 side of the liquid crystal display panel 5; and a first quarter-wave plate 7 and a second quarter-wave plate 8 disposed between the liquid crystal display panel 5 and the first polarizing plate 6, successively from the side close to the first polarizing plate 6. The liquid crystal layer 2 is configured to have a retardation smaller than the retardation of the second quarter-wave plate 8; the slow axis of the second quarter-wave plate 8 is orthogonal to an alignment axis of liquid crystal molecules when no electric field is applied; and the slow axis of the first quarter-wave plate 7 intersects the slow axis of the second quarter-wave plate 8.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
