Abstract:
1,010,599. Fuel cells. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. May 2, 1962 [May 8, 1961], No. 16780/62. Heading H1B. A fuel cell element comprises two frames of electrically-insulating material, each holding a carbon plate, between which it is intended to supply electrolyte, the outer faces being for fuel gas and oxidant respectively. The arrangement is such that gas oxidant and electrolyte ports extend through the element and the two frames are joined face to face via an 0-ring seal that is arranged to open the correct ports to the correct faces by running inside or outside the ports. The gas face (12) is shown and the 0-ring 38 extends outside gas ports 14, 16, 18, 20 (the two latter being outlets), but inside 60, 62, 64, 66 (oxygen) and 40, 42, 44, 46 (electrolyte).
