Abstract:
1434234 Trialkyl tin polymers AUSTRALIA COMMONWEALTH OF 5 July 1973 [5 July 1972] 32181/73 Headings C3P and C3G A trialkyl tin polymer comprises the following units recurring in the structure thereof in which R is a propyl or butyl group, X is hydrogen or methyl, Y is hydrogen or and Z is -O.CO.CH 3 , -COOCH 3 , -CO,NH 2 , -COOH or Cl provided that when Z is Cl, X is hydrogen, the units being present either in a regular or random arrangement in the polymer. The polymer may be prepared by (i) copolymerizing a mixture of monomers comprising (a) a trialkyl tin derivative having the formula and (b) vinyl acetate, acrylamide, acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride or a mixture of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride; (ii) graft polymerizing a tripropyl or tributyl tin acrylate with free radical sites present in polyvinyl chloride in the presence of a free radical generating catalyst or of high energy gamma radiation; or (iii) preparing a linear chain growth copolymer containing (a) acrylic acid or maleic acid or maleic anhydride groups and (b) methyl methacrylate or vinyl acetate groups and thereafter reacting the copolymer with tripropyl or tributyl tin oxide or methoxide. In the examples tributyl tin acrylate, vinyl acetate, acrylic acid, maleic anhydride and tripropyl tin acrylate are bulk copolymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and tributyl tin acrylate is grafted on to polyvinyl chloride in the presence of toluene, methylisobutylketone and benzoyl peroxide. Antifouling paints are prepared containing the polymers, cuprous oxide, toluene, methylisobutylketone, xylene, titanium dioxide, triazine herbicide and chromium (III) oxide.
