Abstract:
Process for prepg. dibenzazecine derivs. of formula (I) comprises reducing dibenzoquinolizindes (II) in liq. NH3 or liq. amine in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal (R = is not >6C opt. substd. alkoxyalkyl or cyclopropylalkyl or tetrahydropyranyl; R1 = is not >5C alkyl; R2 = is not >10C arylmethyl; X=acid residue). (I) are inters. for analgesics e.g. methylation of 9-OH then removal of R gives 9,10-dimethoxy-3-hydroxy-7-methyl-5,6,7,8,13,14-hexahydrolibenz c.g. azecine. The process avoids using expensive berberine as starting material and gives high yields because selective cleavage of the C14-N bond is assured by chossing protecting gps. R1 and R2 which decrease electron density in the D ring but increase it in the A ring.
