Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
1457526 Lithium-iodine cell WILSON GREATBATCH Ltd 13 Dec 1973 [31 Jan 1973] 57805/73 Heading H1B A cell for implantation in the human body comprises, Fig. 2, a plastics casing 10 containing a lithium anode assembly 20, iodine-containing material 50 and a cathode collector 44. The assembly 20 comprises a holder 23 of a fluoropolymer material having a planar face 25 and a peripheral rim 25 and containing two lithium plates 30, 31 sandwiching therebetween a collector 33 of zirconium or nickel mesh. A lead 22 comprising a zirconium or nickel conductor 35 surrounded by insulation 36 penetrates the casing 10, holder 23 and lithium plate 30 and is connected to the collector 33. It is important to prevent contact between the iodine in material 50 and the collector 33 and to this end the plates 30, 31 are bonded to each other around their peripheries by the application of pressure to seal therebetween the collector; also, the peripheries of the plates are bonded by the pressure to the rim 27. To improve contact between the plates 30, 31 grooves 40 are provided. The holder 23 is secured and sealed to the casing 10 by a layer of fast-setting cyanoacrylate cement 43 and this cement may also be applied between the rim 27 and the peripheries of the plates 30,31. The cathode material 50 comprises a charge transfer complex of an organic material and iodine, the preferred organic material being 2-vinyl pyridine polymer which is an electron donor. The material 50 is a viscous flowable substance. Cathode collector 44 is of zirconium or nickel foil and is connected to a lead 46 of similar material. A plastics sheet 45 is between the collector 44 and casing 10. To ensure bonding between the insulation 36 and conductor 35 the latter is perforated (Figs. 4, 5, not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the anode comprises a pair of lithium discs 70, 72 pressure bonded together and against a current collector 74, the discs being retained in an annular holder 60 of a fluoropolymer together with two masses 80, 82 of iodine-containing cathode material. Cathode current-collectors 83, 84 contact the material 80, 82 and have leads 85, 86. The cell is sealed by a pair of plastics housing members 87, 88 surrounded by a fluoropolymer liner 89 and this assembly is enclosed in an outer hermetically sealed metal casing 90. Another embodiment. Another embodiment similar to Fig. 8 has iodine pellets providing an additional iodine supply. In another embodiment (Fig. 10, not shown) there is a single central cathode and two anodes situated to either side of the cathode. In a modification the cathode has an iodine pellet to supply additional iodine.
