PURPOSE: To provide new compounds having antagonistic properties against antiotensin II and useful for treating hypertension, aldosteronism, and heart failures.
CONSTITUTION: The compounds of formula I, e.g. 6-butyl-1,2-dihydro-2- oxo-1-[2'-(tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-ylmethyl]pyridine, are obtained by reacting the compounds of formula III (X1 is -NH2, -COOH) with the compounds of the formula IV [X2 is -COOH when X1 is -NH2, and is -NH2 when X1 is -COOH]. In the formula I, R is a group of formula II {R3 is H, COOH, -CHO, etc.; R4 is H, A (A is a 1-6C alkyl); R5, R6 are each H, A, 2-6C alkenyl, Ar [Ar is (substituted) phenyl], etc.}, R1 is H, a Hal (Hal is F, Cl, Br, I), A, -OA, -NO2; R2 is COOH, COOA, CN, NO2, NH2, etc.; X is either absent or -CO-, -O-, -NH-CO-, -CO-NH-, -CH2-O-, etc.
