USE: A drug exhibiting the pharmacological activity effective for the digestive organs, particularly the gastrointestinal system.

PROCESS: Ice water is added to a Japanese green gentian, which is then crushed in a blender to form a slurry. The slurry is then steam distilled. The resultant distillate is saturated with common salt, and extracted with ether. The solvent is then distilled away under reduced pressure to give an esential oil of the Japanese green gentian. The resultant essential oil is then subjected to the column chromatography with silica gel, and extracted with 15% ether/hexane solvent. The solvents are distilled away from the extract to give the essential oil component, which is then subjected to the preparative chromatography.
