NEW MATERIAL:2-Exo-hydroxy-endo-tricyclo[6.2.1.02.7]undecane of formula I .
USE: Perfume. It has strong green, camphor-like, or woody fragrance similar to a component of patchouli oil, and is useful for the control of the perfume of lavender-type, lavandine-type, bergamot-type, fusea-type and sypre-type. Since the compound has a polycyclic aliphatic structure similar to natural sesquiterpene alcohols, the compound is expected to have pharmacological activities such as antiviral, antibacterial and plant-hormone activities.
PREPARATION: The compound of formula I is produced by reacting 1mol of endo-tricyclo[6.2.1.02.7]undecane of formula II with 1W10mol of a peracid such as m-chloroperbenzoic acid in a solvent such as 1,2-dichloroethane for 5W40hr under refluxing, thereby hydroxylating the bridge-top of the starting compound.
