PURPOSE: To provide a new compound low in side effects, having a high HMG- CoA reductase inhibitory effect and useful as a cholesterol lowering drug, a lipid lowering drug, etc.
CONSTITUTION: There is provided a compound of formula I [A is ω- oxycarbonyldihydroxybutyl, tetrahydropyranyl, ω-oxycarbonyl-3-oxobutyl, formyl or cyano; R1 is a halogen, a (substituted) 1 to 6C lower alkyl, etc.; R2 and R3 are each H or a (substituted) 1 to 6C lower alkyll, e.g. sodium (E)-7-[4'-fluoro-6- hydroxy-5-methoxy-3-(propan-2-yl)biphenyl-2-yl]-3,5-dihydroxy-6-heptenoate. In addition, the compound of formula I can be obtained, e.g. by reacting a compound of formula II (Bn is benzyl) with diethyl cyanomethylphosphonate.
