To obtain the subject new compound giving negative results of Ames test and excellent in coloring power, hue, clearness, light resistance, thermal resistance, solvent resistance, top coat fastness, etc.
This compound is that one expressed by the formula (R1 is a 3-10C alkoxy; R2 is a 3-10C alkoxy, 3-10C alkyl; R3 is a halogen, an alkyl, alkoxy, etc.), e.g. 3,3'-di-n-propoxy-6-chloro-4,4'-diaminodiphenyl hydrochloride. The compound expressed by the formula is obtained by diazotizing 2-n- propoxyaniline at 0-10°C, coupling with a phenol derivative at pH 9-10 and 0-10°C, contacting the resulting compound with 1-bromopropane in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate in an organic solvent (e.g. acetone, 2- butanone), subjecting the resulting mixture to reduction reaction in an system with zinc powder and caustic soda added in an organic solvent at 90-100°C for 2-5 hrs., and after the reduction, rearranging in 20-25% hydrochloric acid aqueous solution at 5-10°C.
