PURPOSE: To accurately judge the shape abnormality of an object by continuously measuring the outer shape of a traveling body connected with multiple objects having the same shape, obtaining the configurational characteristics of each object and the adjacent object, and comparing them with threshold values in a fabric spreader or a film drawing machine.

CONSTITUTION: Both side ends of a film vertically drawn by a drawing device are held by tenter clips and guided into a lateral drawing device, and the laterally drawn film is wound by a winder. To judge the abnormality of the tenter clips, top clip sensors 20, 21 detecting a top clip serving as a reference among a series of clips constituting clip chains 17, 17 of a tenter 8 are provided. Liner surface height sensors 22, 23, edge position sensors 24, 26, and liner position sensors 25, 27 are provided. Sensor signals are fed to a control means, configurational characteristic values of each clip and the adjacent clip are obtained, and the characteristic values are compared with the prescribed threshold values to judge the shape abnormality of clips.
