To provide a use relating to metabolism of blood iron as a new use of Camellia sinensis polyphenols obtained by extracting Camellia sinensis.
This prophylactic/therapeutic agent against excess iron caused hepatopathy comprises ≥50% total of Camellia sinensis polyphenols, preferably (-)-epicatechin gallate and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate as an active ingredient. In the case of high blood iron concentration, the oral administration of the agent removes excess blood iron to reduce blood iron concentration. In the case of relatively low blood iron concentration, administration of the agent with iron has stabilization action (control action) of promoting iron absorption and controlling reduction in blood iron concentration. Furthermore, in the operation, the agent has not a great influence on the number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin concentration.
