PURPOSE: To obtain a coupling component directly usable for dye preparation, by alkylating an aromatic amine with an aromatic sulfonate in a hydrophilic alcohol as a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic amine of formula I: (A1 is benzene, naphthalene, or quinoline, nucleus which may be substituted by a lower alkyl group; R1 is H or lower alkyl group which may be substituted by alkenyl group, etc.) is reacted with an alkylating agent of an aromatic sulfonate of formula II: (A2 is benzene nucleus which may be substituted by a methyl group; R2 is lower alkyl group which may be substituted by a furfuryl group, etc.) in a hydrophilic aliphatic or alicyclic primary or secondary alcohol solvent in the presence of an acid binder at 0W130°C to give an alkylated aromatic amine of formula III.
EFFECT: Slight decomposition of the alkylating agent, and no problems in coupling steps without recovering the solvent after the alkylation.
