Abstract:

PURPOSE: To alkylate an aromatic compound in the presence of a Lewis acid capable of recovery.
CONSTITUTION: In alkylation of an aromatic compound having one or more substitutable hydrogen atoms on its aromatic ring by reacting an alkylation agent therewith in the presence of a catalyst, this method for alkylation of an aromatic compound is carried out by using a rare earth metal-based catalyst represented by general formula RE(OSO2Rf)3 (RE is a rare earth metal atom. Rf is a perfluoroalkyl group or a perfluoroalkoxy group) as the catalyst. In addition, the rare earth metal-based catalyst is recovered after completion of the reaction and the recovered reaction catalyst is recycled as a reaction catalyst in this method for alkylation of an aromatic compound. Although recovery and recycling of the catalyst were difficult in the Friedel Craft alkylation reaction until now, this method enables recovery and recycling. A remarkably high industrial and practical value is brought about thereby.
