PURPOSE: To enable the elongation of the usable life of a catalyst for the alkylation of phenolic compound, with stable reaction operation, at a definite conversion, by removing O2 successively from the reaction raw material and the catalyst containing metallic oxide, and carrying out the reaction under oxygen-free condition.
CONSTITUTION: At least one compound selected from phenolic compound or anisole compound having at least one ortho-hydrogen atom, is subjected to the catalytic reaction with a saturated aliphatic alcohol in vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst containing metallic oxide, to alkylate the phenolic compound or the anisole compound. In the above process, the reaction is carried out by removing O2 essentially completely from the alcohol, phenolic compound, or anisole compound or water used as another raw material and/or the catalyst.
EFFECT: The amount of produced tarry material can be considerably reduced.
