PURPOSE: To produce an eutectic Al alloy for thixocasting, capable of providing sound castings.
CONSTITUTION: This Al alloy has the following thermal characteristic: in the differential thermal analysis curve (d), a relationship of E1>E2 is established between the peak value E1 of a first projecting endothermic section (e) by eutectic melting and the peak value E2 of a second projecting endothermic section (f) by the melting of the components having melting points higher than the eutectic point. A temp. straight line (m) intersects the base line (i) connecting a rise starting point (g) and a fall finishing point (h). A parting line (o), bisecting one line segment m1 of the temp. straight line (m) existing between a first point (n) of intersection and a vertex (j), intersects an ascending line segment (p). A relation of ΔT2/ΔT1≤0.68 is established between ΔT1 and ΔT2 when Tr-Ts=ΔT1 and Tm-Ts=&Tgr 2 are satisfied and Tm, Ts, and Tt represent the temp. of a second point (q) of intersection, the temp. of the rise starting point (g), and the temp. of the vertex (j), respectively. By this method, the property of supplying liquid phase to the periphery of solid phase can be improved.
