To provide an amorphous carbon material for lithium ion secondary battery anodes which makes it possible to restrain capacity deterioration due to repetition of charge/discharge cycles, storage in a charged state, and floating charging.
A lithium ion secondary battery anode to which the amorphous carbon material pertains is such that, in a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, its crystallite size in a c-axis direction, Lc(002), which is calculated by diffraction line (002) of an amorphous carbon material measured by powder X-ray diffractometry, is 2.0 to 8.0 nm, and that, in electron spin resonance spectroscopy measured by using an X band, the anode has a carbon derived spectrum appearing in a range of 3200 to 3400 gausses (G), and the relative signal intensity ratio (I4.8K/I40K) of signal intensity (I4.8K) at a temperature of 4.8K against the signal intensity (I40K) of the spectrum measured at a temperature of 40K is 2.4 to 3.5.
