PURPOSE: To obtain an anti-retrovirus agent, containing cyanidin or a derivative thereof as an active ingredient and effectively used as an inhibitor against infection with retroviruses and proliferation thereof.
CONSTITUTION: An anti-retrovirus agent containing a compound expressed by the formula (R1 and R2 are H, hydrocarbon group or glucoside-forming residue of a six-membered ring pyranose type hexose or five-membered ring furanose type pentose; R3 is H or hydrocarbon group; X- is a residue of an acid), e.g. cyanidin chloride, cyanidin chloride-3-glucoside or peonidin chloride as an active ingredient. The aforementioned compound has inhibitory action on reverse transcriptases derived from retroviruses and is capable of inhibiting cell degeneration with the retroviruses in cells infected therewith and effective against pathogenic viruses of acquired immunodeficiency syndromes, pathogenic viruses of adult T cell leukemia, animal retroviruses, etc.
