Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide an antibiotic WAP-8294 A or its salts which has specific physical and chemical properties and is useful in treating MRSA (methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infections.
CONSTITUTION: This antibiotic, WAP-8294A, has following physical and chemical properties: appearance: white powder; melting point: 213-220°C (decomposition); solubility: soluble in water, methanol, n-butanol, DMF and DMSO, insoluble in acetone and ethyl acetate; coloring reactions: positive to aqueous ninhydrin, Ehrlich, Rydon-Smith and potassium permanganate and sulfuric acid, while negative to aqueous Molisch and Dragendorff; UV spectra (in water): λmax 275, 280, 287 (nm); IR spectra (KBr): 3300, 1720-1725, 1636, 1541, 1404, 1207, 1137 (cm-1); molecular weight: 1,400-1,700; a qualitative test: a compound comprising C, H, O and N atoms; specific rotation: αD20=+42°. This antibiotic is obtained by culturing Lysobacter sp. (FERM P-14093).
