To provide a technique that properly controls electric quantity of an electrically heated catalyst by taking it into consideration whether a condensed water exists and a remaining quantity of the condensed water when controlling the electric quantity of the electrically heated catalyst.
An apparatus includes: a catalyst carrier 4 that heats an exhaust purification catalyst 5 by electrictrothermal heating; a case 7 that houses the catalyst carrier 4; and a mat 8 that is provided between the catalyst carrier 4 and the case 7. The apparatus calculates an absorbed amount of the condensed water that is generated in and evaporated from the case 7 based on an operating time of the case 7 and an internal combustion engine 1. Moreover, the apparatus calculates a remaining amount of the condensed water remaining in the case 7 using the absorbed and evaporated amount of the condensed water, and changes a total request power amount that is supplied to electrodes 6 and required for the catalyst 4 based on the remaining amount of the condensed water.
