An apparatus and a method are disclosed for reducing a thickness of a thermomechanically-affected layer 16 on an as-machined surface of a hard metal workpiece 12 being machined by a hard cutting tool 14 exerting a thermomechanical load on a surface of the workpiece 12. The method involves reducing the thermomechanical load on the surface of the workpiece, and the apparatus includes a means for reducing the thermomechanical load on the surface of the workpiece. At least one part of the thermomechanical load is one component of the cutting force, and the component is applied to the surface of the workpiece at a right angle to reduce the cutting force component for reduction of the thermomechanical load.
