To obtain an aqueous emulsion, capable of providing a coated membrane excellent in water resistance, and excellent in a pot life by using a specific polymer as a dispersoid and a specific vinyl alcoholic polymer as a dispersing agent.
This aqueous emulsion is obtained by using (A) a polymer comprising an unsaturated monomer unit which is an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and/or a dienic monomer as a dispersoid and (B) a vinyl alcoholic polymer containing 0.01-30 mol.% unit having an amino group bound to a heterocycle in the molecule as a dispersing agent. The unit, preferably the unit of formula I [R1 to R5 are each H or a ≤8C hydrocarbon; A is a bifunctional hydrocarbon; S is a sulfur atom; X is a monovalent group having an amino group bound to a heterocycle, preferably a group of formula II (Z is S, O, NH or CH2).
