An automatic opening/closing device for vehicle door comprises a laser radar 2 which transmits a probing wave successively to scan at least the neighborhood of the external surface of a swing door while receiving the reflection wave of the probing wave and which based on the received reflection wave detects an obstacle on the opening/closing locus of the swing door. By successive detection of obstacles with the laser radar 2, prescribed gestures of a user within the range scanned by the proving wave are detected, and based on the detection results of gestures automatic opening/closing of the swing door and other vehicle doors is started.
