To provide a backlight unit in which color saturation is elevated, and which has a shell type light emitting diode.

The backlight unit comprises a base, a light emitting diode array that is electrically connected to the base with pins and that is composed of a plurality of red, blue, and green shell type light emitting diodes, a light mixing cabinet installed at the base for making the light emitting diode array positioned inside, a light diffusion film that is fixed to the light mixing cabinet in parallel with the base and diffuses the light from the light emitting diodes more uniformly, a first prism film fixed to the light mixing cabinet in parallel with the diffusion film, and a second prism film fixed to the light mixing cabinet in parallel with the first prism film in the backlight unit.
