To provide a backside electrode substrate for electronic paper, which hardly brings about display unevenness to be able to obtain good information display characteristics when being used in electronic paper, and electronic paper using the same.

The electronic paper comprises a backside electrode substrate 10 for electronic paper, which includes: a display electrode layer 1 which includes an insulating layer 1α for the display electrode and a display electrode 1β on the insulating layer for the display electrode and has a pattern shape corresponding to display information; a wiring electrode layer 2 which includes an insulating layer 2α for a wiring electrode disposed on the display electrode of the display electrode layer and a wiring electrode 2β formed on the insulating layer for the wiring electrode and has such a pattern shape that electric charge can be given to the display electrode; a planarizing layer 3 which is formed on a region other than a wiring electrode layer arrangement region where the wiring electrode layer is disposed, on the display electrode of the display electrode layer and has a thickness equal to that of the wiring electrode layer; and a protection film 4 disposed over the wiring electrode of the wiring electrode layer and the planarizing layer.
