A band saw is provided with a cutting part for rotating and moving the edge of a band saw, a moving and positioning part 19 for moving and positioning the cutting part to a cutting position along a work W and a work table 13 for placing the heavy work W. Therefore, it can be cut without moving and positioning the heavy work W. The moving and positioning part 19 is provided with a saw edge housing 107, a main column 39 for supporting the saw edge housing 107 vertically slidably and an auxiliary column for holding the saw edge housing 107 vertically slidably and also for restraining the rotation and is installed integrally by a frame 29 by which the main column 39 and the auxiliary column can straddle the work W. Therefore, as the main column 39 and the auxiliary column are connected rididly through a gate type frame 29, the saw edge housing 107 can be lowered straight without swinging at the cutting time.
