To obtain a bearing steel for induction hardening for machine component having excellent machinability.
A bearing steel for induction hardening comprising, by mass, 0.5 to 0.8% C, 0.8 to 1.7% Mn and ≤0.002% O2 and having a mixed structure of lamellar pearlite and spheroidal cementite is subjected to machining under the conditions satisfying a machining rate of 29.7 m/min, a feed of 0.2 mm/rev and a drilling depth of 20 mm using a straight drill (SKH51) having a Rockwell hardness of 83 to 92 HRB and a diameter of 8 mm. At this time, the number of machinability holes as the number of holes till the drilling is made impossible is controlled to 122 to 316. The bearing steel for induction hardening suitably comprises one or more selected from ≤0.35% Si, ≤0.03% P, ≤0.03% S, ≤0.3% Ni, 0.1 to 0.5% Cr and 0.005 to 0.040% Al as well.
