PURPOSE: To achieve effective damping with a damping mechanism in a simple structure by applying the damping operation of a belt tensioner with motion frictional resistance between two relatively slidable surfaces, obtained by an elongation structure engaged with a curved surface.
CONSTITUTION: A belt tensioner 28 for an automobile engine gives constant tension to a timing belt 12 so that the motion of a rotationally moving structure 34 for carrying a pulley 36 with respect to a fixed structure 30 can be controlled by a damping mechanism 40 in both directions opposite to a belt tensioning direction. The damping mechanism 40 having an elongation structure 46 engaged with the curved surface 44 of a ring 42 and thrust thereagainst with the force of a spring 38 gives high resistance to a belt non-tensioning direction and relatively low resistance to a belt tensioning direction for friction sliding motion over the force of the spring to provide damping with such gripping operation. Effective damping is achieved even in a simple structure.
