PURPOSE: To obtain a high-performance new benzanthrone derivative good in compatibility with especially a binder resin as a charge transport substance used for electrophotographic photoreceptors.
CONSTITUTION: This benzanthrone derivative of formula I [R1 and R2 are each an alkyl, an aromatic group, an alkoxycarbonyl, an aryloxycarbonyl, carbamoyl, an acyl, an alkoxy, an aryloxy, amino, sulfone, sulfonamide, cyano, thiocyano, nitro or a halogen; X is O, N-R3, N-CN or C(A)(B) (R3 is an alkyl or an aromatic group; A and B are each H, an alkyl, an aromatic group, a heterocyclic group, an alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl or cyano); m} is 0-4; n is 0-6], e.g. 10-methylbenzanthrone. The compound of formula I in which X is O, is obtained by carrying out the Friedel-Crafts reaction of an R1-substituted benzoyl chloride of formula II with an R2-substituted naphthalene of formula III, providing an R1-substituted phenyl R2-substituted naphthyl ketone of formula IV and then conducting the Scholl condensation thereof.
