A gear shift device 10 installed to a bicycle is provided with an installation part 20, winding and releasing levers 22, 24, a cable locking body 26, a position holding mechanism 28, a gear shift position display part 30, and the cover member 32. The installing part is installed to the bicycle and has an opening 38. The winding and releasing levers are movably installed to the installing part. The cable locking body is movably installed to the installation part so as to lock a gear shift cable. The position holding mechanism is supported by the installation part so as to hold the cable locking body in positions corresponding to a plurality of the gear shift positions of the gear shift device according to operations of the winding and releasing levers. The gear shift position display part displays the gear shift position with the opening in mechanical conjunction with the movement of the cable locking body. The cover member is installed from outside the opening and covers the opening so that the displayed gear shift position is visually recognizable.
