To provide a binder for a molding material, the binder showing an extremely little change with lapse of time and containing a water-based lignin derivative having high safeness, and to provide a molded article having high strength and excellent durability by using the binder.
The binder for a molding material contains an organic medium having a tertiary amine, a lignin derivative, and if necessary, an alkali metal hydroxide. The binder for a molding material preferably further contains phenol and aldehyde, in which the phenol reacts with the aldehyde to form a phenol-aldehyde resin, and the lignin derivative is present by covalent bonding or dispersion in the phenol aldehyde resin. A molding material is coated or impregnated with the above binder for a molding material, then heated, dried and cured to obtain a molded article. When the molding material includes a cellulose material, in particular, cellulose fibers, the technology effectively utilizes cellulose or lignin from plant resources and greatly contributes to utilization measure of plant resources, reduction in an amount of carbon dioxide gas emission, and the like.
