To provide the subject new gene originated from a microorganism of the genus Kurthia, composed of a DNA sequence coding for a polypeptide having a specific amino acid sequence, participating in the biosynthesis of biotin and useful e.g. for the production of biotin important as pharmaceuticals, food additives, etc.
This new DNA sequence codes for a functional derivative of a polypeptide having amino acid sequence of the formula I, formula II, etc., or a polypeptide derived from the above polypeptide by the addition, insertion, depletion and/or substitution of one or plural amino acid residues. The sequence is originated from a microbial strain of the genus Kurthia (Kurthia sp.) having at least one gene participating in the biosynthesis of biotin in amplified state and is useful e.g. for the production of biotin which is an essential vitamin for the nutrition of animals, vegetables and microorganisms and important pharmaceuticals, food additives, etc. The gene can be produced by extracting DNA from Kurthia 538-KA26 to construct a gnomic library and subjecting to colony hybridization using a fragment of biotin biosynthesis gene II as a probe.
