PURPOSE: To decrease the dilution of the material into build-up weld zones and to obtain an overlay metal of a prescribed compsn. having high quality by specifying the inclination of a welding torch and performing build-up welding in such a way that welding arc adjoins the existing build-up weld zone.
CONSTITUTION: A welding torch 3 is inclined relatively to the surface of a member 1 to be build-up welded at approximately the same angle as the tangent of the surface of the member 1 at the point where the line extended from the central axis of a welding rod or wire 4 intersects with the surface of the member 1. Build-up welding is then performed in such a way that build-up members 2', 2"... are constituted and that at least a part of the welding arc adjoins the existing build-up weld zone, thereby forming the max. penetration zone by the welding arc existing internally in the adjacent existing build-up zone. The penetration to the member 1 is thus made extremely small except in the first build-up weld zone and the prescribed compsn. of the overlay metal is maintained.
