PURPOSE: To obtain a built-in ballast type metal vapor discharge lamp with high efficiency by connecting a resistor in series to a luminous tube in the outer bulb of a lamp, providing a conductor near the luminous tube, applying high voltage pulse to the adjacent conductor, and starting the lamp.
CONSTITUTION: A resistor 3 is built in the outer bulb 1 of a lamp in series to a luminous tube 2 and an adjacent conductor 5 connected with a high voltage pulse generator device 4 is provided. The device 4 is fit in the metal cap of the lamp or in an adapter provided between the outer bulb section of the lamp and the metal cap. The inner part of the outer bulb 1 is kept in high vacuum. The luminous tube 2 is a multicrystal alumina tube in which sodium, mercury, and xenon gas are sealed. As a result, a discharge lamp with high efficiency can be obtained without requiring any external ballast and without paying special attention to the withstand pulse voltage of a power circuit, etc. In addition, the lamp efficiency can be improved by using an unsaturated vapor pressure type luminous tube.
