The cable brake mechanism includes a brake element extending from a first connection point 14 to a second connection point 34, having at least one first brake member 19 and second brake member 21 and permitting a maximum brake stroke 44 during braking operation. In a first brake stroke section 46 of the maximum brake stroke, the first brake member exerts braking action, and in a second brake stroke section 50 of the maximum brake stroke, the first brake member and the second brake member exert braking action, or the second brake member exerts braking action. Braking action in the second brake stroke section is greater than the braking action in the first brake stroke section.
