PURPOSE: To provide a calender in which an endless metal belt is brought into face contact with a paper sheet under pressure to secure a suitable level of bulkiness in addition to unevenness-free gloss and smoothness.

CONSTITUTION: In this calender for paper making, respectively mutually faced driving rollers 3a, 4a and guide rollers 3b, 4b are arranged on both the upper side and lower side of a running paper sheet P and a pair of endless metal belts 1, 2 of less than 3μm maximum height in the surface roughness (according to JIS B0601) are fitted to these rollers and the pressure of 0.5-10kg/cm2 is applied to the metal belts 1, 2 from pressurizer 5, 6 of heating medium type. The driving rollers 3a, 4a are started to move the endless metal belts 1, 2 in the same direction on the side where both belts come near to each other and steam is fed to the pressurizers 5, 6 and the paper sheet P is threaded between the belts 1, 2 so that the paper P is brought into face contact with the belts 1, 2 from the position of the pressurizers 5, 6 remaining more than 250mm, preferably more than 10mm for calendering. Instead of the pair of metal belts 1, 2, a metal belt used on its one side face and an elastic roll or a metal roll on its other side face may be used.
