PURPOSE: To ensure safety by generating the optimum shock absorbing force in accordance with the car speed or the magnitude of the load in the event of car collision in cooperation with an orifice and a gas spring stably and approx. constantly over the full stroke of a shock absorbing cylinder.
CONSTITUTION: An arrangement according to existing invention includes a shock absorbing cylinder 11, a bumper 12 supported by its piston rod 33 fixedly, a pump 13 to supply pressurized liquid from a reserver 14 to the liquid pressure chamber 35 of this shock absorbing cylinder 11, an orifice 15 to control the rate of flow of the liquid pressure liquid returned from this liquid pressure chamber 35 to the reserver 14, a gas spring 16 in communication with the liquid pressure chamber 35, and a control unit 20 to drive this pump 13 in response to signals given by a load sensor 21, car speed sensor 22, pressure sensor 23, and stroke sensor 24. The magnitude of the load on the car is met properly through adjustment of the initial pressure in the shock absorbing cylinder 11, and in the event of car collision the shock absorbing force is kept constant through combination of the liquid pressure damping force of the cylinder with the damping force of the spring 16.
