The car navigation apparatus comprises a position detector 64 for detecting a vehicle's position via GPS or the like, a camera 32 for photographing a target, an image processor 34 for recognizing the garget from the photographed image of the camera 32 to output feature data, and a data base processor 66 for recognizing the target from the feature data output from the processor 34 and feature data of the target stored in a CD-ROM 50 to acquire its position data from the CD-ROM to correct the vehicle's position calculated by the detector 64. In this case, two cameras or a radar is used, and a distance to the target may be further detected.
