To obtain the subject new compound in which amino acid is introduced in the molecule, not giving phytotoxicity to paddy-field rice, exhibiting strong herbicidal activity on paddy field weeds and useful as a herbicide for paddy-field rice.
This compound is represented by formula I [R1 to R3 are each H or a lower alkyl; R4 is H, a lower alkyl, etc.; R5 is H, a lower alkyl, etc.; X is a lower alkyl, a lower alkoxy, a halogen, a halogen-substituted lower alkyl, etc.; Y is oxygen, sulfur or a group of NH, etc.; (m) is 0-4], e.g. O-[1-{3- trifluoromethyl)phenoxy}-2-butyl]-N-{1-(ethoxycarbonyl)-1-ethyl}carbamate. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with an equivalent of slightly excess amino acid derivative represented by formula III without or in a solvent, in the absence or presence of a base, preferably at 0-80°C (ambient temperature to 80°C in the case without solvent).
