PURPOSE: To provide carboxymethyl cellulose excellent in clarity, flow behavior at the time of printing and prevention of woven textiles from hardening and useful in a printing flow modifier, etc., which is obtained by conducting pulverization to a specific particle size after the first-stage etherification and carrying out the second-stage etherification so as to obtain a specific degree of substitution.
CONSTITUTION: Desired CMC to be obtained by a two-stage etherification method comprising conducting pulverization after the first-stage etherification has a degree of substitution of 1.3-2.2, preferably 1.5-2.1 and a particle distribution of the powder pulverized after the first-stage etherification being 100%≤2.0 mm. For example, cellulose and monochloroacetic acid are reacted by a slurry etherification method to obtain CMC having a degree of substitution of 0.9-1.2 which is then pulverized to a particle distribution of 100%≤2.0 mm and again by the slurry etherification method the CMC is reacted with monochloroacetic acid to obtain a desired product.
