To prevent erroneous diagnosis caused by dispersion in air-fuel ratios between cylinders.
A device diagnoses degradation of a catalyst by measuring an oxygen storage capacity OSC of the catalyst arranged on an exhaust passage of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, and comparing a measurement value with a degradation determination value OSCs. The device detects a parameter (an imbalance ratio) relating to a degree of the variation in air-fuel ratios between cylinders, and corrects the measurement value of the oxygen storage capacity or a degradation determination value based on the detection value. A reduced value of the measurement value of the oxygen storage capacity caused by the air-fuel ratio variation is compensated to prevent the erroneous diagnosis that a normal catalyst is erroneously determined as degraded one.
