Abstract:

To provide an improved and simplified method for transesterifying a glyceride by using a monohydric alcohol.

There are provided use of a transesterification catalyst selected from a group consisting of an alkali metal- or alkali earth metal-alkanolate or an alkali metal hydroxide, and use of a catalyst system which comprises at least one activator selected from a group consisting of a salt-like compound, titanate or a non-salt-like compound having a density of at least 0.9 g/mL and differs from the transesterification catalyst; and a manufacturing method in which the catalyst systems are used in a method of manufacturing a fatty acid alkyl ester which comprises transesterification of at least one monoglyceride, diglyceride or triglyceride in the presence of at least one monohydric alcohol. Furthermore the present invention relates to use of the fatty acid alkyl ester obtained by the method as a component of a biodiesel.
