To provide a chain tensioner having reduced cost by shortening a machining cycle time for a female screw on the inner periphery of a plunger.
In the chain tensioner 1, the plunger 10 is slidably inserted into a bottomed cylindrical cylinder 9 having one end opening in the axial direction, a screw rod 14 is provided which has a male screw 13 on the outer periphery for screw-engaging with the female screw 12 formed on the inner periphery of the plunger 10, the protruded end of the screw rod 14 from the plunger 10 is supported by a rod seat 15 provided in the cylinder 9, the plunger 10 is energized to be protruded from the cylinder 9 by a return spring 16, and a chain 6 is thrust by the protruded end of the plunger 10 from the cylinder 9. The threads of the female screw 12 on the inner periphery of the plunger 10 are intermittently formed at peripheral spaces. The threads are formed with press molding.
