PURPOSE: To provide a character recognition device which can easily and surely recognize the connected or separated characters even if a user does not instruct the correction of a character segmenting method when a character recognition means has a wrong character segmenting method and erromeously recognizes the connected or separated characters.

CONSTITUTION: A character recognition device is provided with a character recognition means 2 which recognizes the characters of the character pattern data on the written characters, etc., a storage means 3 which stores true characters recognized by the means 2 as the characters corresponding to the character pattern data and also the candidate groups of these recognized characters, and the character generating means 7 and 8 which generate new characters based on the combination characters consisting of plural characters and different from these characters, a character table which previously stores the corresponding relation with plural characters, the characters which are recognized by the means 2 and stored in the means 3 based on the character table and the candidates prepared to those recognized characters.
