To provide a chemical reaction method for taking an organic compound, especially a hydrocarbon, into the inner space of a cage-like complex, irradiating the product with light to excite the cage-like complex, thereby subjecting the organic compound to a chemical reaction not caused in an ordinary state, in more detail, to provide the chemical reaction method, by which a photoreactive or difficultly photoreactive aliphatic cyclic hydrocarbon can specifically (and selectively) be photo-oxidized under a mild reaction state.
This chemical reaction method is characterized by making a three-dimensional cage-like transition metal complex to include an organic compound as a guest molecule in a solvent to produce the clathrate complex, irradiating the clathrate complex with light to excite the clathrate complex, thereby chemically reacting the guest molecule. When an alicyclic hydrocarbon is used as the guest molecule, the alicyclic hydrocarbon can be subjected to a photooxidation reaction not caused in an ordinary state.
